Install a Minecraft Skin on Java & Bedrock

Last updated:

You have a new skin file. This guide shows how to put it on your character in Java Edition and in Bedrock Edition, and what to check if it does not show up.

Java Edition (PNG)

Open the Minecraft Launcher and go to Minecraft: Java Edition → Skins. Choose New skin, give it a name, pick Classic or Slim arms and browse to the PNG. Select Save & use.

The new skin shows up the next time you join a world or server. On servers it can take a minute to refresh for other players.

Bedrock Edition (.mcpack)

On Windows, phones and tablets, open the .mcpack file. Minecraft starts and imports the skin pack. Then open Dressing Room, find the pack under Classic Skins and equip the skin.

If your device cannot open .mcpack files, import the PNG instead: Dressing Room → Classic Skins → Owned → Import → Choose new skin.

Consoles

Most consoles do not allow importing custom skin files. Equip the skin on a device that does, then sign in with the same Microsoft account; some platforms sync it, others only show packs from the Marketplace.

If the skin looks wrong

Arms look shifted or have a gap: switch between Classic and Slim. Parts are missing: make sure the PNG is 64×64 and was not resized or compressed. The old skin still shows: leave and rejoin the world, or restart the game.

Before you install: check the file

A Java skin must be a PNG that is exactly 64×64 pixels (old 64×32 skins also work). If you saved it from a chat app or a phone gallery, it may have been resized or turned into a JPG; download it again from the original page instead. A Bedrock skin pack ends in .mcpack. If your browser saved it as .zip, rename it back to .mcpack before you open it.

Decide on the arm style before you install. Slim skins have 3-pixel arms and leave a column empty on each arm; if you load one as Classic, you will see a transparent strip along the arm.

Phones and tablets (iOS and Android)

On iPhone and iPad, tap the .mcpack in the Files app or in your downloads list and choose Minecraft. On Android, open it from the downloads notification or a file manager and pick Minecraft if you are asked which app to use. The game starts, shows “Import started”, then “Successfully imported”. Open the Dressing Room, go to Classic Skins and scroll to the bottom to find the new pack.

If nothing happens when you tap the file, Minecraft may not be installed on that device, or the browser saved the file somewhere it cannot open. Move it to Files or Downloads first, then try again.

Use the same skin on Java and Bedrock

Java and Bedrock keep separate skins, even with the same Microsoft account. Install the PNG through the Java launcher and the .mcpack on Bedrock. An HD 128×128 skin only works on Bedrock, so keep the 64×64 PNG for Java; AI skins from our generator come with both files.

Other players still see Steve or Alex

On Java, other players load your skin from Mojang, so it can take a minute to refresh after you change it. Servers in offline mode cannot fetch account skins at all; there only skin plugins help. On Bedrock, some servers only allow Marketplace skins and show a default skin instead of a custom one.
