How to design a Minecraft skin
- 1
Start from a skin
Begin with Pip, import a PNG or a .mcpack, or press Edit in editor on a skin from the AI generator.
- 2
Paint the base layer
Use pen, fill, replace and gradient inside the cyan boxes. Keep the face on the front of the head.
- 3
Add the second layer
Hats, hoodies and sleeves go in the gold boxes. Turn Layer 2 off in the preview to check what is underneath.
- 4
Download
Pick Classic or Slim arms, then save a PNG for Java or a .mcpack for Bedrock.
Java vs Bedrock skin files
Java Edition
.png · 64×64- File
- A 64×64 PNG. Second-layer pixels you leave empty stay transparent.
- Arms
- Pick Classic (4 px) or Slim (3 px) in the launcher to match how you painted the arms.
- Install
- Minecraft Launcher → Skins → New skin, then choose the PNG.
- Old skins
- 64×32 skins import into the top half; the left arm and leg start empty.
Bedrock Edition
.mcpack- File
- A skin pack with your skin and the pack manifest, ready to import.
- Arms
- The pack records Classic or Slim, so the skin equips with the right arms.
- Install
- Open the file; Minecraft imports it. Then equip it in the Dressing Room.
- Use it in
- Phones, tablets and Windows. Most consoles cannot import skin files.
Skins you make here are yours to use on your own account, worlds, packs and videos. Do not copy other people’s skins or trademarked characters.
Skin painter tips for a cleaner design
Shade, don’t outline
Two or three tones of one color read better at 64×64 than black outlines.
Match the arm style
Slim arms leave the outer column of each arm empty. Paint for the style you will pick in game.
Keep the second layer sparse
Only fill the gold boxes where something should stick out, like a hood or a hat brim. Empty pixels stay invisible.
A Minecraft skin designer that runs in your browser
This is a hand-drawn tool: you place every pixel yourself. If you would rather start from a photo or a sentence, the AI Minecraft Skin Generator on our home page draws a first version, and Edit in editor opens it here so you can finish it by hand.
Under the hood it is a full Minecraft skin painter and layer editor. A skin is a 64×64 PNG folded around the character; each body part has six faces plus a second layer for hats, jackets, sleeves and trouser legs. The template boxes show where everything lands: cyan for the base layer, gold for the second layer.
Everything happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded. Start from our character Pip, import a PNG you already have, or open a generated skin, then export a PNG for Java Edition or a .mcpack for Bedrock. People also call this kind of tool an mc skin editor, a Minecraft skin maker or a Minecraft skin creator — it is the same thing, and here it is free.
